Can Cats Read Humans’ Minds? Be Careful About What You Think!

Can cats read humans’ minds? I’m not so sure about that. But we do pick up on our people’s thoughts, so be careful what you think when you’re around your cat.

Can cats read humans' minds?

Is your cat a mind reader?

Thomasina, can cats read humans’ minds? I’ve been worried about a lot of things lately, and my cat is beyond stressed.

Hi Concerned…

I guess you could say cats read humans’ minds. Although I never thought of us as mind-readers, we definitely do pick up on our humans’ thoughts, moods and even their health.

When our humans are happy, we’re happy. When they’re depressed or stressed, we are, too.

What We See When Cats Read Humans’ Minds

When cats read humans’ minds, what we see isn’t always good.  When you think caring for your cats is becoming too much of a burden or you’re tired of having them around, they know. If you’re not feeling well, they know that, too. Some might try to help, but others will just stay out of your way. Not all of us want to be nurses!

Here are some other things we see when cats read humans’ minds.
    • We know when our people are going away, even before the suitcases come out. You can ease your cats’ stress by telling them where you’re going, when you’ll be back and who will be feeding them while you’re out of town. Many of us also know when our people are coming home! We can pick up on those “coming home” thoughts from miles, or even oceans, away.
    • We know when you’re angry, even if you’re not angry with us. Human anger can be very confusing and stressful for cats. Can you try to keep it to a minimum? If you’re about to have a major meltdown, could you do it outside away from your cats?
    • We know when you’re depressed and become depressed, too. Maybe you could try to spend some time cuddling or playing with your cats or going for a walk with them. That would make you and the cats all feel better!

  • Your cats also know when you’re stressed, and your stress makes them stressed. Playing, cuddling and walking with cats are great stress relievers, too. And something else to remember is that stress can affect a cat’s health. Allergies, bladder stones and crystals and excessive grooming are just a few of the health problems that can be triggered by stress.
  • We know when you’re making what we consider unreasonable demands on us, even if you’re just thinking them. Be careful about that! Your cat might feel so pressured, he’ll decide to do the exact opposite.

Cats Read Their Humans’ Faces And Body Language, Too

While cats read humans’ minds, our people communicate with us in other ways, too. We can tell a lot about your mood by the look on your face (yes, we do notice!), the way you move and your tone of voice.

If you sound calm and confident about a visit to the vet, your cat will probably be calm and confident, too. If you want your cat to cuddle with you, try smiling instead of frowning.

A happy, peaceful human means a happy, peaceful home for us. And most important, it’s a home where we feel safe.

Oh… I’m picking up on our human’s thoughts, and she’s thinking it’s time for us to eat. Gotta go now, Concerned. I hope this answers your question.
